Com-Steel has its roots deep in Whatcom County, Washington. After retiring from Anvil Corporation as Vice President in 1990 Doug Smith and his wife Maralee started designing and permitting commercial and industrial buildings in Northwest Washington under the name of Com-Steel, Inc. For five years, Com-Steel Inc. teamed up with Jack Laird Construction, a well known local contractor with over 20 years of experience in residential and light commercial construction, to provide construction services until their formal partnership in 1995 forming Com-Steel, LLC.
2005 has seen a new leaf turn for Com-Steel. With the retirement of Jack in 2002 and Doug at the end of 2004, Com-Steel enters the realm of second generation ownership. Sara Brown, Rusty Laird, Gerald Schober and Ric Wilson have taken over ownership.
